Another accolade for the Young's Fish for Life programme
Young’s Fish for Life programme for sustainable seafood has received further award recognition in being named as one of 11 UK winners in the prestigious European Business Awards for the Environment (EBAE). Young’s was the only food industry business amongst the finalists.

Fish for Life was started by Young’s in 2003 in response to the growing challenges of protecting fish supplies and the marine environment for the long term. It encompasses detailed criteria and a stringent assessment process to ensure that all the fish used by Young’s is responsibly sourced. The Fish for Life logo appears on every Young’s pack.

Certificates were awarded to the companies at a reception in London last week by Environment Minister, Dan Norris MP, who said, “I want to congratulate all of our eleven winners and wish them every success in the European competition.”

“All of our winners have shown great innovation and invention with new products, processes and systems which provide improved environmental performance and importantly, value for money for their customers.”

Mark Escolme, managing director of Young’s and Findus UK said, “Naturally we are absolutely delighted that the quality of our Fish for Life standard has once again been independently recognised. Used as an on-pack label, Fish for Life has the key benefit of providing straightforward consumer reassurance that all Young’s fish – of whatever type - has been responsibly sourced.”

All the UK finalists now go forward to next stage of the EBAE Awards and will be assessed alongside all the winners from other European countries by a jury which meets in Madrid later this month.

Notes to Editors

Young’s “Fish for Life: Supporting Sustainable Fisheries” entry is one of four UK winners in the ‘Management’ category of the EBAE Awards. This nomination is the fifth award for the Fish for Life programme in the last 3 years.

Whilst encompassing recognised certification schemes (like the MSC) for both wild and farmed fish, the Fish for Life programme goes further in also representing Young’s continued commitment to policies and actions which support long term sustainability – such as sponsoring the Isle of Lewis langoustine fishery to MSC status and lobbying for improvement in the Baltic cod fishery. The programme now also applies to the Findus brand across Europe through Young’s parent, The Findus Group.

The EBAE Awards
The prestigious EBAE awards are for companies across Europe that demonstrate commitment to the environment by introducing pioneering and eco-innovative solutions into their businesses. The Royal Society for the encouragement of the Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) put forward eleven winners from its UK award scheme to be pitched against winners from across the continent in competition for the prestigious EBAE awards. The UK has entries in three categories, for Management, Processes and Products and has more entries than any other member state.

The EBAE awards are held every two years. UK companies have won at least one award in each round since 1994. The next stage is when the European Jury meets in Madrid in mid-March, after which shortlisted companies will be announced on the EBAE website www.ebae.eu as well as in a press release. Winners will be revealed at an awards ceremony to be held in Brussels during Green Week 2010, from 1 to 4 June. For further information please visit www.rsaaccreditation.org.
