The Findus Group has just completed a £368,000 investment programme which has virtually eliminated costly and environmentally unfriendly diesel powered forklift trucks from its UK sites in Grimsby and Scotland – and which reduces the CO² emissions from its forklift fleet by 99%.
The Findus Group in the UK consists of Young’s Seafood, Findus and The Seafood Company. It has 10 manufacturing sites, with a total fleet of around 100 forklift trucks. The majority of these were formerly diesel powered or used outdated battery technology.
Now, working with supplier, Linde, the Findus Group has invested in a new supply agreement which brings in a combination of state of the art gas-powered and ‘Trak Air’ electric fork lifts. This has created a robust, high standard, economical and more environmentally friendly fleet with that is estimated to reduce CO² emissions by 72 tonnes a year.
Whilst initial investment in the project is significant, the Group is forecasting that over the next five years it will achieve savings of around 40% on the operational running cost of its fork lift fleet – created through a combination of reduced fuel costs plus the benefits of a new full maintenance package.
Sharon Swannick (goods and services manager) has developed the project. She says, “We started this a year ago with the aim of creating a more modern, environmentally friendly fork lift solution for the Group in the UK. Since the new fleet was introduced at the start of this month, we’ve had nothing but positive feedback from our staff. The fact that it also reduces cost and improves our environmental footprint makes it a win-win project all round.”
James Turton, director of sustainability for the Findus Group says, “This is a great example of what can be achieved both in terms of business efficiency and improved environmental impact when an organisation takes the time to investigate better ways of managing some of the most basic aspects of its operation.”
