Annan-based seafood company Pinneys of Scotland has scooped a silver award at today’s prestigious Food and Drink Federation (FDF) Community Partnership Awards. The Awards, which took place at the Institute of Directors in London, reward organisations across the food chain that are making a positive difference to their local communities and the environment.
The company was presented with the award in the business best practice section of the Environment category for its ambitious carbon management programme, aimed at driving the company towards environmental excellence. By 2010 Pinneys will strive to implement: improvement of its carbon footprint; a zero waste to landfill policy; a 25% reduction in water consumption; an Environmental Management System; and a strong customer alliance.
To date key achievements include: diverting 77% of waste from landfill; a 5.2% increase in recycling between 2007 and 2008 (now, over 6% of the company’s waste is recycled); a 10% weight reduction across most product packaging; and an 18% reduction in the company’s carbon footprint.
Julian Hunt, FDF Director of Communications, said:
“All our winning initiatives demonstrate the different ways in which our industry is helping to educate, inspire and develop communities across the UK. And it’s great to see that companies are continuing to see the value of investing their time, money and effort into this work despite the economic slowdown.”
